Moses with the tablets of the Ten Commandments...
Moses with the tablets of the Ten Commandments, painting by Rembrandt (1659) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

What is sin?  Well, for one thing it is breaking any of the ten commandments which can be found in Exodus 20 and are basically:

1.  You shall have no other gods before Me

2.  You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything

3.  You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God

4.  Remember the Sabbath day

5.  Honor your father and mother

6.  You shall not murder

7.  You shall not commit adultery

8.  You shall not steal

9.  You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor

10.  You shall not covet

So, let’s start with number 1 for example.  The painting by Rembrandt used for an image here may very well be breaking that law.  The truth is I don’t know.  I do not bow down to it and claim it can do things for me but, it is an image.

Ever take a cookie when your mom wasn’t watching?  Or a toy from your sibling?  A paper clip from work?  Yea, that is stealing.  And that tiny paper clip separates us from our Creator.  Jesus told his disciples that just looking at a woman in lust was adultery.  If it is what is in our hearts we are all toast.  The Bible states this is the case:  For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory, emphasis of Romans 3:23 mine.

Now, when I was a kid I thought God was hateful for setting us up to fail.  It wasn’t until I heard the truth – while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, paraphrase and emphasis of Romans 5:8 mine that I realized I had been believing a lie about God.

God is good.  He has good plans for us…Jeremiah 29:11 and is not willing that any should perish, Matthew 18:14 and 2 Peter 3:8-10.  We deserve to be beaten with a scourge.  We deserve to go to Hell by the standards God set in place.  But God did not desire that we suffer those things.  I do not know why not!  He sent His only son to take our place and take our punishment.  Somehow that gives God glory.  Our part is to accept His sacrifice and agree that He is Lord over all, including us.

The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved, Romans 10:9.

If you want God to be Lord of your life, I urge you to find a nearby church.  Yes, the organized church has lots of issues and problems but it also has something else – the body of Christ meets there and you are going to need some people.  The devil is going to come after you once you choose God.  If you want, leave a comment and I’ll know to pray for you.  Or, email the name of this blog (off beat on purpose) at hot mail dot com.  Close the spaces and use the at sign.  God speed!
