A family struck by a car that sped through a 4 way stop sign resulting in brain damage for two very bright girls who previously had promising futures. A child snuck out of his home with a friend on a lark only to be killed by a criminal because he witnessed a crime. A girl with a horrible disease that finally took her life before she entered the 6th grade. Two extremely bright 4th grade boys who interviewed men in suits driving luxury cars on downtown street corners to learn how they got there who told me they would not live to see 21. We told them “Knowledge is power” and “you need an education”. Only, education did not save them. I had been lying to my students. I quit teaching school.
Today, I am back in college working on a 2nd Masters’ degree. How did I get here and why am I telling you? We have to start with the truth teller, the one who wrote the way things are.
Hebrews 11 is sometimes called the chapter on the hall of faith; think hall of fame only for disciples. The writer describes several of our ancestors in the faith explaining that some died destitute while others conquered kingdoms and that the world was not worthy of any of them. Then mix in the following:
- Ephesians 6 where the writer informs us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the “rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.
- Matthew 25:14-30 where Matthew records Jesus’ parable of the talents and how we are to use them not bury them
- Romans 13:1 where Paul tells the Romans to submit to every authority because they have been established by the Lord God
God works within the authority He has established therefore so must I.
