As we saw in Zechariah previously, today’s passage holds a list of things to come. Today we are in Matthew 24. I won’t break them up as much as I did yesterday but I will make 2 posts to cover it all. The main thing for me is that Jesus says, in verse 25, “see, I have told you ahead of time”.
Deception, false Christs, and various disasters such as earthquakes have already taken place so we know the birth pains of the new Creation had already begun when Christ walked the earth.
…What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming ‘I am the Christ,’ ad will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom will rise against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Persecution, death of the saints, and hatred of the saints will occur. The saddest part, to me, is that many will “turn away from the faith”. As churches find their numbers dwindling it is easy to understand why many think we are at or near the very end. We haven’t even touched on Revelation and it is a ways off as yet.
Turning back to the passage at hand we find that there will be:
False prophets, more deception , increasing wickedness, and the gospel will have been preached to every nation or what we call people group.
Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
